London Heathrow Airport (LHR)

About London Heathrow Airport

London Heathrow Airport (IATA code LHR) is the largest airport in the United Kingdom and one of the busiest international airports in the world. It is located in west London, in the borough of Hillingdon, about 25 km from central London.

Heathrow is the main hub of British Airways and serves a huge number of long-haul routes. It has several terminals — currently Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 — which are spread over a large area. London has several other airports too, including Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN), all grouped under the city code LON, so check carefully where your flight lands.

Getting to the city centre

Heathrow has several well-established rail links:

• Heathrow Express — a non-stop train to London Paddington station.
• Elizabeth line — connects the airport with Paddington and continues through central London without changing.
• London Underground — the Piccadilly line serves the terminals and runs into central London; slower but useful for many destinations.
• Coaches and taxis — also available from the terminals.

Check which terminal each service stops at and current details on the official Heathrow website.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

• Check your airline's recommended check-in time and allow extra time for security and passport control.
• Look at the terminal shown on your ticket or booking confirmation and confirm it on the airport's departure boards.
• Baggage allowance depends on your fare, so check what is included with the airline before you fly.
• Moving between Heathrow terminals can take a while, so allow generous time if you have a self-arranged connection.
