About Milan Malpensa Airport

Milan Malpensa Airport (IATA code MXP) is the largest airport serving Milan and the wider Lombardy region in northern Italy. It is located north-west of the city, roughly 50 km from the centre, in the province of Varese, not far from Lake Maggiore.

Malpensa handles most of Milan's international and long-haul flights and has two terminals: Terminal 1, the main one, and Terminal 2. Milan also has Linate (LIN), close to the city, and Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY), popular with low-cost airlines. These three airports share the city code MIL, so always check the exact airport on your ticket.

Getting to the city centre

Given the distance, choose your transfer carefully:

  • Malpensa Express — airport trains run to Milano Centrale and Milano Cadorna stations in the city.
  • Coaches — bus services link both terminals with Milano Centrale.
  • Taxi — comfortable but the long distance makes it the most expensive option.

Check whether your train stops at Terminal 1, Terminal 2 or both, and see current information on the official airport website.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

  • Check your airline's recommended check-in time and allow extra time for security and passport control.
  • Look at the terminal shown on your ticket or booking confirmation and confirm it on the airport's departure boards.
  • Baggage allowance depends on your fare, so check what is included with the airline before you fly.
  • Because Malpensa is far from the centre, plan at least an hour or more for the trip from the city to the airport.
