About Hamad International Airport

Hamad International Airport (IATA code DOH) is the main airport of Qatar and serves the capital, Doha. It opened in 2014, replacing the old Doha International Airport, and is located on the eastern edge of the city, close to the Gulf coast.

The airport is the hub of Qatar Airways and is widely used as a transfer point between Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Many passengers only see it during a connection, but Doha itself is also a destination worth a stopover, with its museums, waterfront Corniche and traditional souq. The airport's spacious single-terminal design keeps transfers relatively straightforward.

Getting to the city centre

Getting into Doha is straightforward:

  • Doha Metro — the Red Line has a station at the airport and connects it with central Doha, including the West Bay area.
  • Taxi and ride-hailing — available outside arrivals.
  • Hotel transfers — offered by many hotels in the city.

Metro operating hours may differ on Fridays and holidays, so check the official airport and Doha Metro websites before you go.

Practical tips

A few simple habits make the airport part of your trip much smoother:

  • Arrive early, especially in peak travel seasons: queues at check-in, security and passport control can build up quickly.
  • Double-check the airport code and terminal on your booking — cities with several airports are easy to mix up.
  • Check passport validity and entry requirements with official sources such as the embassy or consulate.
  • If you are only connecting in Doha, check whether your bags are checked through to your final destination when you check in.
