Connecting Flights: How to Plan a Trip with Layovers

Not every destination has a convenient direct flight, and sometimes a route with a stop is simply cheaper. Connecting flights can be a smart choice, but they need a bit more planning than a direct trip. This guide explains the difference between one ticket and separate tickets, how much time to allow between flights, what to check about transit rules and what happens to your luggage.

Single ticket vs separate tickets

This is the most important thing to understand before booking a trip with a connection.

One ticket (one booking)

When both flights are on a single booking, the airline or airlines involved have agreed to carry you all the way to your final destination. If the first flight is delayed and you miss the connection, the carrier is generally responsible for rebooking you onto a later flight. Your bags are usually checked through to the end.

Separate tickets (self-transfer)

Sometimes the cheapest option is two unrelated tickets, for example from Baku to a hub city and then onwards with another airline. This can save money, but the risks are on you:

  • If the first flight is late and you miss the second, the second airline has no obligation to help. You may need to buy a new ticket.
  • You usually have to collect your bags, pass through passport control, check in again and go through security.
  • Changes or cancellations on one ticket do not automatically adjust the other.

Search results on comparison sites may include self-transfer combinations. Look carefully at the offer details on the partner's page to see whether it is one booking or several.

How much time to leave between flights

Each airport sets a minimum connection time – the shortest transfer that is officially considered possible. On a single ticket, the booking system normally respects it. That does not mean the minimum is comfortable. Things that make you need more time:

  • Changing terminals, especially at large hubs.
  • Passing through passport control or a second security check.
  • Travelling with children, older relatives or a lot of hand luggage.
  • Connecting from a flight that is often delayed, or during bad weather seasons.

On separate tickets, give yourself a much larger buffer, because you will probably need to collect bags and check in again. Many travellers allow several hours, and for important trips some even plan an overnight stop. Check the airport's official website for terminal information; our airport pages are a good starting point for major hubs such as Istanbul (IST).

Transit visas and entry rules

Transit rules depend on your citizenship, the country where you change planes, whether you stay airside and whether you need to collect luggage. Some countries require a transit visa even if you never leave the airport; others do not. Rules change, so do not rely on forum posts or old articles.

  • Check the official website of the transit country's embassy or consulate.
  • Check the requirements published by your airline.
  • Remember that on separate tickets you may have to enter the country to recheck bags, which can require a visa.

mibilet does not provide visa advice. Please confirm the rules with official sources before you book.

Baggage through-check

"Through-check" means your bag is tagged to your final destination and moved between flights for you. On a single ticket this is usual, though there are exceptions (for example on some routes when entering certain countries, where you collect and recheck bags at the first point of entry). On separate tickets, bags are normally not transferred automatically. Ask at check-in where your bag is tagged to, and look at the destination code on the tag.

Making connections work for you

  • Compare total journey time, not just the price. Our guide on comparing travel options explains how.
  • Prefer daytime layovers if you can.
  • Keep essentials, medicines and a change of clothes in your hand luggage.
  • For trips with several cities, try the multi-city planner.

Connection checklist

  • Is it one booking or separate tickets?
  • Is the layover longer than the minimum and comfortable for me?
  • Do I need to change terminal or airport?
  • Have I checked transit visa rules with official sources?
  • Will my bag be checked through to the final destination?
  • Do I know what happens if the first flight is late?
