Istanbul: a city on two continents
Istanbul is one of the most popular destinations for travellers from Baku, and it is easy to see why. The city stretches across the Bosphorus, with one side in Europe and the other in Asia. It is known for the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar, but also for its lively neighbourhoods such as Karaköy, Kadıköy and Beşiktaş, ferry rides between continents and a food scene that ranges from street simit to long seafood dinners.
Istanbul works well for many kinds of trips: a short city break, a shopping weekend, a business visit or a stopover on the way to somewhere else. Spring and autumn are usually the most comfortable seasons for walking around, summers are warm and busy, and winters are cool and often rainy, with fewer crowds at the main sights.
Airports in Baku and Istanbul
From Baku you fly out of Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD), the main international airport of Azerbaijan. Istanbul has two large airports, and it is worth checking which one your ticket uses:
- Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, north of the city.
- Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW) on the Asian side.
Both airports are connected to the city by airport buses and taxis, and IST also has a metro connection. Travel time to the centre depends a lot on traffic, so leave a buffer, especially in the evening rush. If your hotel is in Kadıköy or elsewhere on the Asian side, SAW can be the more convenient option; for Sultanahmet, Taksim or Beşiktaş, IST is often simpler.
How to find a good price on mibilet
mibilet does not sell tickets. We compare offers from our travel partners so you can see the options side by side and then book directly with the partner you choose. A few habits help a lot:
- Be flexible with dates. Moving your trip by a day or two can change the price noticeably.
- Use the price calendar. It shows prices by day and month, so you can spot cheaper periods at a glance.
- Compare both airports. Search for Istanbul as a city to see flights to IST and SAW together.
- Check the details before booking. Baggage rules, transfer time and fare conditions differ between offers.

Practical tips
- Documents and visa: entry rules depend on your citizenship and can change, so always check the official sources (the consulate or government website) before you travel.
- Currency: Turkey uses the Turkish lira (TRY). Cards are widely accepted, but some cash is handy for small purchases and public transport top-ups.
- Time zone: Istanbul is one hour behind Baku.
- Public transport: a rechargeable transport card makes metro, tram, bus and ferry trips easier.
