Tashkent: gateway to the Silk Road
Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is a large green city that mixes Soviet-era avenues, modern buildings and centuries-old Islamic architecture. Highlights include the Khast Imam complex, the huge domed Chorsu Bazaar, Amir Timur Square and the famously decorated stations of the Tashkent metro. Food is a big part of any visit: plov, samsa, fresh bread and fruit from the markets are hard to resist.
Many travellers from Baku come to Tashkent for business, to visit relatives or as the starting point for a Silk Road journey to Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva. The climate is continental: summers are hot and dry, winters are cold. Spring, with blossoming trees, and autumn, with the fruit harvest in the markets, are generally the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing.
Airports: GYD and TAS
Your flight leaves from Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku. In Uzbekistan you arrive at Tashkent International Airport (TAS), the country's main air gateway, located within the city limits and relatively close to the centre. Taxis, including those booked through ride-hailing apps, and city buses connect the airport with the rest of Tashkent. As in many big cities, it is a good idea to agree on the fare in advance or use an app.
